Autonomy

An art practice provides a great deal of freedom because it allows the maker to completely synthesize the constructs of the work. While having the means to produce the work is an end in itself for some, others envision eventually attaining self-sufficiency. This path toward autonomy often involves sacrifice in many forms and rarely comes with a guarantee of success. Many artists must have a day job, which some hope to graduate from while others find complementary to their art practice. Artists must wrestle with creative autonomy, financial restrictions, and the uncertain conditions that exist in an artistic career. Despite the sacrifices involved, many make the decision to embark on an artistic practice for the potential of greater autonomy
