Labor

The relationship between art and labor is one that has continued to evolve as labor and systems of production have changed on a global scale. The artist’s personal labor within a work of art is not the highest standard of technical ability or complexity of thought anymore. Many artists use assistants in the production of their work and many others have thrown out ideas of labor in their work entirely. Artists are not paid for the labor they do in their studios and their work is not priced by the amount of physical labor that went into making it. The duty of the artist has more to do with the critical thought they contribute through a work of art than the work of art, itself. Through the manipulation and labor of physical materials, the artist functions as a craftsman but through the contribution of ideas, the artist functions as a philosopher. The true labor of an artist concerns the point at which the abstract and the tactile merge.
